What You’ll Do
Create an engaging club experience
- Lead weekly Cozy Reading Club sessions at one or two school sites.
- Create a welcoming, inclusive space where every student feels known and encouraged.
- Help students discover books they love and build reading habits that last.
- Prepare the space and materials before each club session.
Support student participation
- Encourage student attendance, participation, and engagement.
- Follow up when students are absent.
- Support student enrollment.
- Help create meaningful student celebrations and special events.
Keep the program running smoothly
- Help the coaching team stay organized and coordinated during sessions.
- Maintain accurate attendance and program records.
- Manage the club library and keep the collection organized and inviting.
- Communicate with school staff and the J3 team as needed.
- Participate in training, meetings, and coaching sessions.
- Support approved material pickups or drop-offs when needed.
What We’re Looking For
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Some college coursework or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Experience working with elementary-aged students in a classroom, after-school program, camp, or other youth program.
- Ability to bring warmth, joy, and energy to learning.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Organized, dependable, and comfortable balancing multiple responsibilities.
- Commitment to student literacy, engagement, and equity.
- Belief that every student can become a confident, capable reader with the right support.
- Reliable transportation to assigned school sites.
- Comfort using Google Docs, Sheets, and Forms for basic documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Coursework in education, child development, psychology, literacy, or a related field.
- Experience supporting literacy or enrichment programs, particularly in under-resourced communities.
- Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English and/or Armenian and English.
Schedule & Compensation
Compensation
$30 per hour
Weekly hours
Approximately 5–13 hours per week, depending on school site assignment.
Typical schedule
One to three in-person club sessions, one weekly virtual meeting, and assigned planning or administrative time.
Location and timing
Club sessions typically run from approximately 1:30–5:30 PM at assigned school sites in Compton, CA.
- Occasional evening or weekend events may be scheduled throughout the year.
- Schedules align with school calendars and program needs.
- Employees are eligible for paid sick leave in accordance with applicable law.
Part-Time School-Year Position
This is a part-time, school-year employee position. Schedules align with school calendars, assigned school sites, and program needs.
Employees may have periods with no scheduled hours during school breaks, holidays, summer months, or other program pauses. Hours and assignments may also change based on student enrollment, school partnerships, and organizational needs.
About J3 Foundation
J3 Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to give kids the foundation they need for a lifetime of reading success.
J3 equips upper elementary students in under-resourced communities with the tools they need to achieve grade-level literacy while building confidence, a love of reading, and a lifelong identity as readers.
Founded in 2018, J3 provides reading intervention programs and after-school reading clubs to students across Los Angeles County. We are committed to changing the story for students, one reader at a time.
Application Process
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Candidates whose experience and background are most closely aligned with the position and J3’s mission will be invited to an initial Zoom interview. Candidates can typically expect to hear from us within one to two weeks, though timing may vary depending on application volume.
The hiring process includes:
- An initial Zoom interview.
- An in-person interview and role-related activity using materials prepared and provided by J3.
- Professional reference checks.
- Live Scan background clearance.
- Completion of a TB Risk Assessment or TB test, as required.
All required pre-employment steps must be completed before beginning work.
